Labor & Birth Care Q & A

What is labor and birth care?

Labor and birth care is the medical support and guidance you receive from the time active labor begins until shortly after your baby arrives. Your care team monitors your health and your baby’s well-being, helps you manage pain, supports you through each stage of labor, and assists with the delivery.

At The Birth Center of New Jersey, you receive continuous one-on-one attention from your midwife throughout the entire labor and birth process.

What happens during labor and birth care?

Your midwife stays with you throughout labor, providing medical care and emotional support. One of your midwife’s most important roles is supporting you and your family with education about the birth process. Your labor and birth care includes:

  • Monitoring your vital signs and your baby’s heart rate throughout labor
  • Vaginal exams with your permission when appropriate
  • Guidance on what’s happening at each stage and your positioning options
  • Comfort measures like position changes, movement, breathing techniques, and hydrotherapy (tubs and showers)
  • Water birth in the spacious birthing tubs

You remain informed and involved in decisions about your care throughout the entire process. Your midwife adapts to your needs, whether that means hands-on guidance or giving you space to labor intuitively.

What pain relief options does labor and birth care include?

Pain relief at The Birth Center of New Jersey begins with alleviating fear through education and providing a low-stress environment.

Your options for managing labor pain include:

  • Hydrotherapy
  • Nitrous oxide
  • Massage
  • Homeopathics
  • Continuous support from your midwife and birth team

The education program helps you understand how labor progresses and use your own resources to cope with labor pain. The center doesn’t provide pain management options like epidurals.

Where does labor and birth care take place?

The Birth Center of New Jersey’s birthing suites provide you with a natural, comfortable, and safe birth experience. Each suite includes beds, birthing stools, and tubs for water birth, creating a setting that helps you relax and labor in a peaceful space.

You control the atmosphere in your birthing suite, choosing lighting, music, and who you want present for your baby’s arrival.
